This week I spoke with Garland Nixon about the protest wave sweeping Europe:

In France, workers and schoolchildren are fighting against austerity and for a decent education.

In Belgium, the example of the French students has spread and they, too, are in the streets alongside workers fighting austerity.

In Italy, the school students' protest has spread from France and joined with the latest round of anti-genocide protests. Fifty cities have been hit by big mobilisations for Palestine.

In Spain, the spark that lit the dry tinder of angry workers was the eviction of an 87-year-old from her home of 70 years. The protest around the housing crisis that burst out is not going away.

And in Germany, schoolchildren have been marching against their government's conscription plans, carrying placards that read 'Russia is not my enemy'.

What do all these protests have in common?

That they are all ultimately caused by the deep capitalist crisis of overproduction, which is driving austerity, wage reduction and the accelerated dismantling of western welfare capitalism at the same time as it is driving us into a third world war.

The capitalists' system is in crisis and the workers have to pay – through falling living standards, destroyed public services, housing, food and energy crises. And as cannon fodder in the war to try to re-establish demand for capitalist production and the hegemony of the monopoly-financier class.

What they also have in common is that in every case, the ruling class is presenting us with right-wing narratives that blame immigrants for the failings of capitalism and try to persuade workers to side with their own exploiters in the titanic battles that are coming.
