About the Theme: The opposite of evil

Interpretation and the Project of Ethics: Dualism, Complexity, and Meaning- A Psycho-historical Tragi-comedy.

 I propose a meta-narrative, a story about our stories, where human interpretation reveals the limitations and contingencies that shape and affect us all. The ethical project is continuous and unavoidable, all of which encompasses the myriad variations of the question “what should we/I do?”. From myth/legend, to religious formulations, the most basic tendency has been to understand ourselves dualistically, or in pairs of opposites. Modernity, at its best, has introduced new, but not complete, paradigms of reality and the beginnings of historical consciousness. From science, we begin to recognize that the fundamental proclivity of life is to move towards complexity, all opposing human tendencies notwithstanding. The constitutive dimension of consciousness is always about and towards meaning, a higher order project (culture), presumably with an intention to live in an integrated fashion. The meta-story encompasses the tensions between our sense/feelings of necessity and the possibility of growth and openness. Critical evaluation of ourselves is required if improvement in the human condition is to emerge as an identifiable probability. Philosophically, I am suggesting that a critical realist perspective provides the best method of understanding this larger project.

 Three Questions for Dialogue:

1) What accounts for the continuing appeal of dualism?

2) What happens to communities when there are no longer shared common stories?

3) Is it possible for the human species to mature, develop and grow?

The Opposite of Evil: Towards an Earth-Centric Good: Crafting New Narratives, Expanding Imaginaries

In today’s technologically advanced yet disconnected world, humanity has severed ties with foundational mythologies that once bridged emotions, reason, and our innate relation with the Earth. This contribution explores the philosophical imperative to craft new narratives that reconnect us to our essence, offering a conscious path towards a good, which is considered as an Earth-centric good. Drawing on ancient myths, Jung’s concept of the unconscious, and modern quantum potentialities, this contribution reflects on humanity’s dual nature—blessed with reason yet estranged from its source. The urge for new stories entails the idea of transcending divisions, reweaving language and new meanings within multidimensional contexts to align with planetary consciousness, fostering harmony and intentionality in a world adrift in disconnection and manipulation.

Simpozij Śvetāśvatara Upaniṣada (dr. rer. nat., Petar Pavlović, Festival Sanje 2024)

V zahodnem svetu je že dolgo močno prisotno zanimanje za nauke in duhovne tradicije Indije, ki so posebej globoko in močno izraženi v Upanišadah. Vendar je ta iskrena težnja po spoznavanju vzhodne misli v obstoječih okoliščinah resno ogrožena na dva načina.

Prvič, s skorajda neomejeno ponudbo potešitve radovednosti o eksotičnosti staroindijskih naukov na hiter in preprost način. Preplavlja nas hudournik plitve, popularne ezoterične literature, ki pogosto spada v kategorijo priročnikov za samopomoč. Pravo raziskovanje indijske modrosti bi moralo izhajati iz pristnega zgodovinskega in miselnega okvira, vendar je vse prepogosto žrtev nepremišljenega prilagajanja pričakovanjem povprečnega zahodnjaškega bralca. Na žalost se v takih primerih pogosto pripeti groba zloraba indijske duhovne in filozofske tradicije, s poenostavitvami, ki v kontekst teh starodavnih besedil vnašajo neresnične ali neverodostojne nauke, še največkrat z namenom hitrega zaslužka. Podobno se dogaja tudi v številnih novodobnih verskih gibanjih, ki se naslanjajo na dediščino hinduizma brez pravega poznavanja in razumevanja osnovnih ter izvirnih naukov – in to se ne dogaja samo na Zahodu, temveč celo v Indiji.

Po drugi strani protipol moderni vulgarizaciji indijske misli predstavlja akademski pristop k branju starih duhovnih in filozofskih naukov, ki ga vodijo tisti trenutek dominantna raziskovalna načela. Zahodna akademska srenja vztraja pri tehnično strogem, filološkem branju, preučevanju in prevajanju besedil, saj skušajo ohranjena besedila zaščititi pred samovoljnimi interpretacijami in se tako dokopati do izvirnega bistva tekstov. Tak pristop je največkrat že a priori mehaničen in redukcionističen, saj lušči zgolj vrhnji sloj besedila, goli tekst, ne prebije pa se do globočin, in tako najpoglavitnejši nauki ostajajo zgolj mrtva črka na papirju.
